A First Portrait

My First Oil Portrait

Here is something I have never done with my painting… So pardon me if I sound a bit thrilled!

This is the first oil portrait I have ever done, and I fretted over this 9 × 12 for five hours. To get ready for it, I practiced drawing faces with pencil for two weeks. I had to practice because I’d only ever drawn one portrait… ever.

Let me tell ya… pencil is nowhere near the same as oil! But I’m happy with how this turned out.

I wasn’t sure how I wanted to approach the colors and values of the teeth. I just wanted to say “finished” for now. I’ll do a few studies of teeth and come back to it.
